Japan–DRC Economic Engagement

Japanese Business Delegation Visits the Katanga Region

TRAPIDE Co., Ltd. is honored to have participated in the first large-scale Japanese business delegation to the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This historic mission gathered 32 major Japanese companies and institutions, represented by 34 delegates, marking one of the most significant organized engagements between Japan and the Katanga economic region in recent years.

The five-day mission was led by the Japanese Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, accompanied by key Japanese institutions including:

  • Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO)
  • Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC)
  • Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)
  • Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
  • Major Japanese financial institutions and industrial leaders

Together, this delegation represented Japan’s coordinated approach to understanding the economic potential of the Katanga region and strengthening long-term cooperation with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Katanga: A Strategic Global Resource Hub

The Katanga region occupies a critical position in the global supply chain for copper and cobalt, two minerals essential to the energy transition, electric mobility, advanced electronics, and next-generation manufacturing technologies.

As global demand for these resources continues to grow, the region’s importance in the international industrial ecosystem is becoming increasingly evident.

For Japan, a country deeply committed to technological innovation, sustainable industry, and responsible resource partnerships, understanding the long-term potential of Katanga is essential.

A Mission Focused on Long-Term Partnership

This visit was not merely symbolic.
It represented a strategic step toward deeper engagement between Japan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Through field visits, discussions with local stakeholders, and direct observation of the region’s industrial environment, Japanese companies and institutions gained valuable insights into the realities, opportunities, and challenges of operating within one of the world’s most resource-rich territories.

The mission also highlighted the importance of building partnerships grounded in:

  • Transparency
  • Technological cooperation
  • Sustainable development
  • Long-term industrial collaboration
